I also believe that the Vista drivers for the Radeon 7500 to 9250 cards seem just as capable in Windows 7 as in Vista, of course lacking WDDM functionality but delivering roughly the same performance I experienced in Vista. In the end, I believe this makes it a bit more friendly for this old machine. The main difference I see between the 2 OS is that Win7 seems to enter a usable state a bit faster, some of the less required startup tasks seem to be relegated to background status, or as in the case of the sidebar (non existant) but the gadgets are still there, but again, more of a background status, in my opinion. My review part 2, going back to the Vista installation on that machine (I usually just have it around for certain tasks, not my usual box) I tried the same dvd, also WMP and got the exact same quality, WEI scores (the slight distortion may have some to do with the old 1.8 P4 and/or the 1680x1050 resolution as well).
